What bike should I use?

The selection of the right bike ultimately comes down to the bike that makes you most comfortable. But, recommendations can be made to assist in the selection process. Here is our attempt to put you on the correct bike for different trail types and conditions.

Western NC Category 1 Rides - Easiest

This ride in Hendersonville, NC takes you along the very pleasant and popular Ecusta Trail as it heads from downtown to the community of Big Bend, about halfway to Brevard, NC. Starting on South Main Street at West Allen, it proceeds about 6.4 miles to the road crossing at Brevard Road. It is a converted rail trail and is well under 1% grade, about 8 - 10 feet wide.

PRE-HELENE: This portion of the French Broadway River Greenway is from Hominy Creek Park along the French Broad River to the Amboy Street Bridge. Along the way, it passes through the Wilson RV Park, Carrier Park and the old Asheville Motor Speedway - now a velodrome

PRE-HELENE: This portion of the French Broad River Greenway is a loop from the west side of the river at the Henderson Road Bridge, down toward the river's edge, turning left and running along the river. At Craven Street, the Greenway turns 180 degrees to the left and climbs back up onto the bluff. It passes by the New Belgium Brewing Company's facilities and returns to the Haywood Street bridge.

PRE-HELENE: This video is the center portion of the French Broad River Greenway trail system and includes the Dog Park at the Amboy Road Bridge over the river. This portion of the Greenway runs north along the river bank for a bit more than a mile to the Haywood Street Bridge.

This piece of the Brevard Greenway takes us to downtown Brevard and the Depot Railroad Avenue Park on Railroad Avenue for a start. From there, the Greenway runs northeast, paralleling US 64 (North Broadway) to Hospital Drive. The Greenway then loops around the back of the hospital to the back of the Transylvania Park and Recreation fields. It tours the Park and pops out next to the Pisgah Forest Elementary School on Ecusta Road. It closely parallels Ecusta Road across the fields to the vicinity of Lowe's Building Supply on US 64.

This Greenway starts at Weaver Park on Merrimon Avenue and winds itself across northern Asheville, passing the UNC Asheville campus, the Asheville Botanical Gardens and ends at Broadway Street

PRE-HELENE: This greenway runs along the east side of the French Broad River and the River Arts District from north to south, starting at Broadway and ending at the Amboy River Bridge

The Thermal Belt trail runs from Gilkey, north of Rutherfordton, southward through Rutherfordton, through Spindale to the elementary school outside of Forest City, a distance of 13.5 miles. It is another rail line that has been converted to a beautiful, paved greenway about 8 feet wide.
